Jim Rummell

December 16, 1936 — February 2, 2025

James E. Rummell, 88, passed away peacefully on Sunday, Feb. 2, 2025, surrounded by his loving family.

Born December 16, 1936, in Columbus, Ohio, Jim is a veteran of the United States Army, serving from 1956-1958. He began working at Mead Paper in 1961 where he dedicated 46 years, retiring in 2007 as a senior turbine engineer for Glatfelter Paper Company.

Jim is preceded in death by a sister, JoAnn Smith, brother Arthur West and daughter, Carrie Keech as well as lifelong friend, Fred Park. He is survived by a sister, Deloris Fontana; his former wife, the mother of his children, and his best friend, Sue Holdren; their four daughters Teri Johnson, Joy (Mike) Colopy, Brooke (Glenn) Detty, and Mindy (Cory) Summar; nine grandchildren Meghan Wheeler, Malea (Tyler) Smittle, Sam (Glenda) Colopy, Susan Colopy, Sarah (Nick Seifert) Colopy, Bobby (Morgan) Cowman, Taylor Cowman, Ethan Summar, and Elissa Summar; bonus grandchildren Tory Cope and Caden Summar; and several great grandchildren.

While dedicated to his family, Jim also spent many years committed to bodybuilding and powerlifting— a passion that was shared with his daughter Brooke, grandson Ethan, and the community. He owned, managed/operated Chillicothe Weight Conditioning Center, Rum's Gym and coached Buckeye Barbenders, and Mid-Ohio Power Club. Along with coaching and mentoring other weightlifters, some of Jim's accomplishments were setting world records for his weight class and age group.  In 1997 Jim was inducted into the American Powerlifting Federation of Ohio Hall of Fame.

In his downtime, Jim enjoyed rooting on the Cleveland Browns, The Ohio State Buckeyes and being surrounded by God's beauty in nature by sitting on his front porch, working in his flower beds, birdwatching, bike riding, and walking the Triangle Trails. He also treasured time spent on his boat, water-skiing and fishing, especially at Dale Hallow Lake, TN — one of his favorite destinations.  He spent countless hours on that water with his grandson Bobby.

Please join us for a celebration of life on Saturday, Feb. 15, at Haller Funeral Home. Friends may call from 1-3 p.m. with service beginning at 3 p.m. Service will be officiated by Marty Eblin, a dear friend of Jim and his family.

The Rummell family would like to give special thanks to the private caregivers as well as National Church Residency, who provided excellent hospice care for Jim over the last couple of years.
