Jerry Schenz

May 2, 1937 — June 12, 2022

Jerry Sargent Schenz passed away peacefully at his residence on Sunday, June 12, 2022, after an extended illness. He was 85 years old.   Jerry, affectionately known as "Poppy" or "Big Jer" by his family and friends, was born on May 2, 1937 in a house on Hanford Street in German Village (Columbus), Ohio. He was the son of John Joseph and Blanche Beatrice Schenz and the youngest of five children.   Jerry grew up in Columbus, Ohio and moved to Londonderry as a boy where his parents owned a grocery store. They ultimately ended up in Blacklick, Ohio where they continued to own and operate a grocery store. Jerry graduated from Gahanna Lincoln High School in 1957. He went on to work as a meter reader for Columbia Gas of Ohio where he worked his way up to division area supervisor, overseeing Chillicothe and Southeastern Ohio. He retired from Columbia Gas in 1998 after 42 years. He went on to valet park at Adena Regional Medical Center after retiring. He loved his jobs and all of the people that he had the pleasure to work with through the years.   Jerry married Colleen (Theobald) Schenz on May 26, 1973. He was a devoted and loving family man and was so very proud of each and every one of his four children. He loved and adored all nine of his grandchildren and enjoyed watching them play sports. He looked forward to celebrating all of their achievements with them and beamed with pride any time they were around. He loved sharing his fond memories and amazing stories of helping at his parent's store that he loving referred to as "the old homestead." Jerry loved sports cars and enjoyed watching open wheel racing and going to road races. He looked forward to going to the Petit Le Mans in Atlanta each year with his son Rob, sons-in-law Matt and Casey, and his best friend, Scott. He was a dog lover and was absolutely smitten with his new puppy, Sophie. He also enjoyed going to the beach in the summer and spending time with his family. He enjoyed the fellowship and commitment to serve and was active in numerous organizations throughout the years.   In 1972, Jerry donated one of his kidneys to his brother, Jack. Because of this selfless act, Jack was able to walk his daughter down the aisle and meet his grandchildren. That's the kind of man he was. To know him was to love him.   Jerry was preceded in death by his parents, John and Blanche Schenz; brothers Ted (Elizabeth "E") and Jack Schenz; sisters Ruth (Bill) Brickles and June Hollenbach; daughter Carol Pasqual and granddaughter Brittany Pasqual. He is survived by his wife Colleen (Theobald) Schenz; son Robert "Rob" (Kim) Schenz and daughters Nicolle "Nikki" (Matt) Phillips and Melissa "Missi" (Casey) Jones; grandchildren Tyler Schenz (28), Emma (Michael) Misch (24), Grace Schenz (22), Brendan Phillips (18), Brodie Phillips (15), Blake Phillips (7), Hope Pasqual (16), and Alexis Jones (8); sister-in-law Fran Hungerford (Jack) and numerous brothers- and sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews. Jerry loved and adored his special friends who were like family; Greg, Kanda, Kacie (Steve) Hatmaker and Sarah Johnson and his very best friend and his family: Scott, Kristine, Andrew and Katherine McCallum.   His funeral service will be held at 11:00am Friday, June 17, at the First Presbyterian Church, 13 Mead Dr., with Dr. Jason Link officiating.  Burial will follow in Grandview Cemetery.  The family will receive friends Thursday from 5-8pm at Haller Funeral Home & Crematory.   In lieu of flowers, consider a contribution to either: Parkinson's Foundation, 200 SE 1st Street, Suite 800 Miami, FL 33131; or the American Heart Assoc., PO Box 840692, Dallas, TX 75284-0692.
