Jerry E. Rittenhouse, Sr., 81, of Kingston, passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, December 13, 2023 at his home, following a brief illness.
He was born March 10, 1942 in Clarksburg, Ohio, son of the late Fred Eugene Rittenhouse and Freda Mae (Payne) Rittenhouse Justice. On October 15, 1987, he married Martha J. (Chester) Rittenhouse, who preceded him in death on July 10, 2011.
Surviving is his first wife and the mother of his children, Mary C. (McGraw) Rittenhouse Harrison; their daughter, Mary Jane (Scott) Speirs; their grandchildren, Sarah (Fiancé Cory) Mangus, Matthew Scott (Tasha) Shoemaker, Ryan (Fiancé Leigh) Speirs, and Courtney (Ryan) Williams; beloved great-grandchildren, Alaina, Landon, Nathan, Kaley, Ava, Hudson, Ryleigh, and Rosalee Jade; his sister, Sherry (Michael) Gallagher; two nieces, Andrea Reed and Melissa Rutter; close friends, Lee Jenkins, Dean Congrove, Paul Reed, and Brian Leanard; as well as numerous other extended family members and friends. In addition to his parents and wife Martha, he was preceded in death by his son, Jerry "JR" E. Rittenhouse, Jr., a brother Larry Rittenhouse; and his two beloved dogs, Poncho and Pepi.
Jerry was a talented mechanic for more than 60 years, beginning his career at the age of 16 working at his dad's station in Clarksburg. He went on to work at Byers in Columbus, as well as several other places in the Franklin County and Pickaway County area. Eventually, he became employed by the Circleville City School District as a supervisor and mechanic in the bus garage, where he worked for an additional 10 years before officially retiring. In his free time, he loved spending time outdoors in nature, gardening, traveling, and loved watching the history channel.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00am on Thursday, December 21, 2023 at the Haller Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Brown's Chapel Cemetery. Friends may join the family for visitation on Wednesday evening from 5:00pm-8:00pm.
