James Alfred "Sarge" Ryan, Sr., 80, of Chillicothe, died at 1:15am Saturday, November 22, 2008, in Adena Regional Medical Center following an extended illness. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00am Wednesday, November 26, in St. Mary Catholic Church, Rev. Lawrence Hummer, Celebrant. Military graveside services conducted by the Ross Co. Veteran Honor Guard will follow in St. Margaret Cemetery. Friends may call Tuesday from 5-7pm at Haller Funeral Home, where a wake service will be held at 7:00pm. Jim was born July 7, 1928, in Jacksonville, IL, to the late Thomas E. and Mary E. Lahey Ryan. On July 9, 1960, he married the former Mary Ann Keller, who survives. Also surviving are his son James A. (Jean) Ryan, Jr.; daughter Patricia "Trish" Ryan; grandsons Ryan Lee Schreck and Stephen A. Schreck; a great-granddaughter Calista Schreck, all of Chillicothe; a sister Mary E. Hart, of St. Charles, MO; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents and brothers John T. Ryan and Robert F. Ryan. Jim was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church. He retired from the US Air Force after serving his country for 27 years during the Korean Conflict and the Vietnam War and was the owner of the former Hofbrau Tavern. He was a member of the American Legion, Post 62; AMVETS, Post 4; VFW, Post 108; Elks BPOE #52; and Eagles Aerie 600. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He was an avid Chicago Cubs fan and proud of his Irish heritage. Memorial contributions may be to Adena Hospice, 111 W. Water St., Chillicothe, OH 45601.
