James Newsome
November 2, 1942 — May 26, 2024
James "Jim" Newsome, 81, passed away on May 26, 2024, at Mount Carmel East Hospital in Columbus, Ohio following a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. He departed from this life the way that he lived, surrounded by his loved ones.
He was born November 2, 1942, in Chillicothe, Ohio son of the late Elmer and Jean Newsome. On June 2, 1972, he married the love of his life, Kathy (Harris) Newsome in Greenup Kentucky.
In addition to his wife, surviving are their children, Rachel (Richard) Huntley, of Reynoldsburg, Ohio; Jaime Benton, of Madison, Wisconsin; and Dominique Newsome, of Columbus, Ohio; beloved grandchildren, Olivia Huntley, Richard Huntley, Aidan Benton, and Joshua Benton; his siblings, Angela Kinney, of Clarksville, Tennessee, and Mark Newsome, of Chillicothe, Ohio; as well as numerous extended family members and friends. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Robert Newsome. Jim left a legacy of strength and love for family. Memories of Jim will endure inspiring generations to come.
Jim was a graduate of Catholic Central High School, class of 1961, where he was part of the winning team for the Ross County Basketball Tournament. Immediately following graduation, he enlisted in the United States Airforce, where he served honorably from June 6, 1961, until June 4, 1965, as an air traffic controller. Upon his return home, he began working at the Port Columbus Airport for the Trans World Airlines as a skycap for the next fifteen years. He later began his position at Kenworth Trucking Company in Chillicothe, where he worked diligently for the next forty-one years until retiring in 2021. Throughout his eighty-one years on this earth, he spent his life nurturing those around him with unfailing strength, resilience, and love. In adversity, he kept a "stiff upper lip," warm embrace, and steady vision of the future. His work ethic, intelligence, and thoughtfulness inspired all who knew him. His family and friends will forever remember his love of sports, especially basketball, and his love for the Ohio State Buckeyes.
A visitation will be held on Friday, June 14, 2024, from 11:00am-1:00pm at the Haller Funeral Home in Chillicothe for family and friends. A memorial service will begin at 1:00pm with Bishop Obadiah Harris officiating. Military graveside honors will immediately follow in Grandview Cemetery. A repast will be held following the graveside service at the Christopher Inn Riverview in Chillicothe. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network (https://secure.pancan.org/site/Donation2?df_id=6701&mfc_pref=T&6701.donation=form1) in his honor.
