James H. Dyer, Sr., 89, of Chillicothe, passed away Monday afternoon, March 22, 2021 at the Echo Manor in Pickerington, Ohio, following a very brief illness.
He was born March 6, 1932, in Chillicothe, son of the late Elmer and Corrine (Hackley) Dyer. On November 5, 1955, he married Glenna M. (Bunch) Dyer, and together they have shared over 65 years of marriage.
In addition to his beloved wife, he is survived by two loving children, Patsy J. Dyer, and James H. Dyer, Jr.; his grandchildren, Jason Dyer, and Christa (Julian) Thompson; great-grandchildren, Cherub, Urban, and Trinity Dyer, and Zoe Thompson; a brother, David Dyer; as well as a host of nieces and nephews, including a special niece, Alice Diane Garrison. He was preceded in death by his parents, four sisters, Mary Jane Jones, Virginia Dyer, Elmira Tracey, and Georgiana Dyer; and two brothers, Bushnell Dyer and Richard Dyer.
James was an honorably discharged veteran of the United States Army, where he served in Korea from August 1952 until August 1954. He later worked at the Chillicothe VA Medical Center and retired in 1987. In his free time, he loved working with his hands, woodworking, carpentry, and was known as a master craftsman among his family and friends. One of his favorite things to do was meeting his friends for breakfast every morning at McDonalds.
A funeral service will be held at 1:00pm on Monday, March 29, 2021 at the Haller Funeral Home with Bishop Melvin Maughmer officiating. Military graveside honors conducted by the Ross County Veterans Honor Guard will follow in Greenlawn Cemetery. Friends may join the family for a visitation from 12:00pm on Monday until the time of the service. Guests in attendance are required to follow Covid-19 protocols and to wear facial coverings at all times while inside the funeral home.
