James Burns

November 9, 1941 — March 25, 2017

James W. Burns, 75, of Grove City, died 11:07 am, Saturday, March 25, 2017 at the Monterey Rehabilitation Center, Grove City, following a brief illness.   He was born November 6, 1941 in Chillicothe to the late John R. and Margaret (Barnhart) Burns. He is survived by his wife, Laura Rebecca (Bone) Burns; a brother, Dr. John Burns; three children, Michelle Burns, James Burns and Michael (Donna) Burns; six grandchildren, all of Indianapolis; five stepchildren, Theresa (John) Schueth, of Indianapolis, Lisa Hirsch (Tom McDonough), of Ann Arbor; Laura (Lew) Vollmar, of Circleville, Stephen (Kim) Hirsch and Michael (Carrie) Hirsch, of Chillicothe; and fourteen step-grandchildren.   Jim graduated from Catholic Central High School in 1959 and attended Ohio State University. He was a twenty year veteran of the US Air Force during the Vietnam era, serving in several areas of the United States and various locations in the Far East. While in the service he was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal, the Air Force Commendation Medal, the Army Commendation Medal and several unit awards. After retirement from the Air Force, he spent many years working in the computer industry. He retired from the Sperry/Unisys Corp., and retired from the State of Ohio. He was an avid bridge player and attained the rank of Life Master in 1981. He will be remembered for his quick wit and fun sense of humor, and for his love of music and history. He married his high school sweetheart on July 7, 1993 and spent his twilight years enjoying his life with his wife and soul mate Laura (Becky). He was a member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in Grove City, OLPH Silver Streaks, and the American Legion Post 888.   The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11:00 am Thursday at St. Mary Church, Rev. Lawrence Hummer, Celebrant. Military graveside services, conducted by the US Air Force and Ross Co. Veterans Honor Guard, will follow in St. Margaret Cemetery. Friends may call 5-7 pm Wednesday at Haller Funeral Home & Crematory, where a prayer service will be held at 7:00 pm. Memorial contributions may be made to the Bishop Flaget School Endowment Fund, 570 Parsons Ave., Chillicothe, OH 45601.
