James "Tennent" Hoey, age 78, of Chillicothe died at 9:06 pm Sunday, October 17, 2010, at Adena Regional Medical Center surrounded by his family. He was born June 7, 1932 in Chillicothe, Ohio to Edwin A. and Tevis Miller Hoey On March 17, 1962, he married Marcia Batteiger, who survives. Also surviving are three children, Benjamin and wife, Kelly, Bill and wife, Amy, of Chillicothe, and Liz and husband Garth Schwellenbach of Amherst, MA.; grandchildren, Joseph Stewart, Peter Hoey, and their mother, Juanita Stewart, Audrey Hoey and Oscar Schwellenbach, and a great granddaughter, Lilly Stewart. Other survivors include two brothers, Brooke Hoey and wife, Florence, of St. Louis, MO, and Edwin A. Hoey, Jr. (Ted) and wife, Carole of Middletown, CT. a brother-in-law, Bill Batteiger and wife, Shirley of Panama City, FL.; nieces Meg Hoey Birnbaum and husband Mark of Princeton, MA., Lesley Hoey of Portland, Maine; nephews, Richard Hoey and wife, Lisa of St. Louis, Charles G. Hoey and wife, Susan, of Peachtree City, GA., and Ned Hoey of California, Alan Batteiger and family of Murray,KY., and Geoffrey Batteiger and family of Florida, and Leslie, Timothy and Tiffany Batteiger of Panama City, FL., and lots of great nieces and nephews. He loved being with his children and grandchildren and all the nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, his wife's parents, Russell and Elizabeth Batteiger, and a brother-in law, Alan R. Batteiger, and a nephew Russell Batteiger. Tennent graduated from Chillicothe High School with the infamous class of 1950, and from the University of Delaware in 1954. He then served in the U.S. Army for two years. In 1957 Tennent was hired as a salesman for Chillicothe Paper Co. and his training consisted of working in all departments to learn the process of making paper. In 1964 Telcom was started and Tennent served as their first manager, later transferring to the Chillicothe Telephone Co. Tennent believed in helping his community and served on City Council and ran unsuccessfully for Mayor. He was very instrumental in creating Streetscape. He also served on the Chillicothe-Ross Library Board, the YMCA Board, and the Robert E. Gay Community Center during the times when they were building and expanding. Tennent was also a member of the Sunset Club. The family is grateful to the Chillicothe Fire Dept. EMT's, the Adena Emergency Room and the Adena ICU department for all the wonderful care he received. Funeral services will be held 10:30 am, Saturday, October 23, at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Rev. Tracey F. Carroll officiating. Burial will follow in Grandview Cemetery. Friends may call 5-8 pm Friday at the Haller Funeral Home. Memorial contributions may be made to The Chillicothe-Ross Public Library, 140-146 S. Paint St.; the Ross County Humane Society, 2308A Lick Run Rd., Chillicothe, OH 45601; or a charity of choice.
