On Saturday, December 16, 2017, Hugh Richard Whitmer, Sr. closed his eyes on earth and opened them to see Jesus' face. Hugh Richard Whitmer, Sr. was born on May 7, 1918, in Grape Grove, OH. He was the third of six children born to Faith Brown Whitmer and Ellsworth Valentine Whitmer. His siblings are Florence Irene Whitmer, Claire Leland Whitmer, Marion Ellsworth Whitmer, Margaret Lois Whitmer and Mary Martha Whitmer. Hugh married Marjorie Lucille Dillon on June 23, 1941. He had three children: Charlotte Ann ( Robert Sawyer ), Patty Louise ( Howard Holland ) and H. Richard Whitmer, Jr. ( Pamela Forby ); ten grandchildren: Thomas Sawyer, Rebecca Sawyer Peyton, Stanley Sawyer, David Sawyer, Wesley Holland, Wayne Holland, Todd Holland, Eric Holland, Jason Whitmer, Angela Whitmer; many beloved nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great -nephews, great- grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren. Hugh was blessed with many dear friends including Pastor Jim Slaughter and Pastor Joe Dillard. He is preceded in death by his wife Marjorie, daughters Charlotte and Patty, both sons-in-law Robert and Howard, grandsons Wesley and Stanley, and all of his siblings. Hugh was a veteran of WWII serving in the Army Coastal Artillery from 1942 – 1945. Hugh lived in Springfield, OH from 1946 through 2012. He was an active member of Beacon Street Church of Christ in Christian Union, serving as Trustee, Usher, and all around handyman. He was employed by Champion Chemical Company for 42 years. He also loved farming. After being a snowbird for eight years, Hugh moved in with his son Richard and family. While residing in Florida, he was a faithful attendee of Kissimmee Christian Church. He enjoyed going to the Disney Parks with his granddaughter Angela. On May 7, 2017, his grandchildren Jason and Angela hosted his 99th birthday celebration at Jason's home. Hugh was a gentle man with an engaging smile. He was loved by many. Now he is walking the streets of gold with those loved ones who preceded him. He will be missed. Funeral services will be held at 1:00pm on Thursday, December 21, 2017, at the Haller Funeral Home with Pastor James Slaughter officiating. Military graveside services will follow in Twin Township cemetery. A visitation will be held from 11:00am Thursday until the time of the service.
