Herman was a veteran of the Korean Conflict, having served in the Air Force from 1947-1952. After being honorably discharged from the Air Force, he returned home to Chillicothe, Ohio where he began work at the Mead Corporation, from which he retired after 40 years of service in 1992. During his years of living and working in Chillicothe, Herman enjoyed his time with family and friends the most. He was active in playing fast pitch softball for River Oil, and gave his spare time to local youth sports teams as a coach. Away from the field, he enjoyed rooting on his beloved Ohio State Buckeyes and Cincinnati Reds. Herman was also active in many veterans' organizations, most notably serving as a commander of American Legion Post #62 in Chillicothe, and as director of the Sons of the American Legion for the same post. He was an avid gardener, and often times he could be found in the kitchen brewing up a batch of Papa Herm's "world famous" hot sauce, made from his own home grown peppers. After leaving the Mead in 1992, he retired to Florida where he enjoyed spending his days outside in the warm weather working the local golf course as a ranger and continuing his life-long passion for golf. He recently returned to his hometown of Chillicothe to be nearer to family in his final years. Herman's family would like to extend their most heartfelt gratitude to the staff involved in his care at the Chillicothe VA Medical Center especially the Acute Medicine Special Care Unit, Home Based Primary Care, and the Hospice/Palliative Care Team at the Veterans Homeland Community Living Center. Your care and compassion for Herman will never be forgotten. Thank you. A celebration of his life will be held 2:00 pm, Wednesday, May 16, 2018, at the Haller Funeral Home & Crematory. Military graveside services, conducted by the Ross Co. Veterans Honor Guard, will follow in Greenlawn Cemetery, Soldier Square. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at Haller's on Wednesday.
