Helen Stanhope

May 31, 1934 — October 16, 2013

Helen M. Stanhope, 79, of Chillicothe, went to be with the Lord at 3:15pm Wednesday, October 16, 2013, at Chillicothe Nursing & Rehabilitation Center following an extended illness. She was born May 31, 1934, in Chillicothe to the late Curt and Emogene (Butterbaugh) Skaggs. On July 21, 1951, she married Erdis Stanhope, Jr., who preceded her in death in 2000. Surviving are her daughter and son-in-law Denise (Curtis) Blair, Kingston; son Steven Stanhope, Canal Winchester; a grandson Gregory (Paula) Soummers, Chillicothe; sister and brother-in-law Ruth (Dave) Pabst, Richmond Dale; and a brother Kenneth Skaggs, of Waverly. In addition to her husband and parents, she was predeceased by her brother Larry Skaggs. Helen was a lifetime member of Charleston Church of the Brethren until she battled a serious health issue. She served as the church treasurer for many years. She also worked as a school crossing guard for the city schools. Fifteen years ago she was told she only had six months to live. Through her courageous battle and strong faith she continued fighting her illness. Due to her health, she had been attending Church Triumphant with her daughter. Graveside services will be held at Noon, Saturday, October 19, at Charleston Church of the Brethren Cemetery (Dunkard Hill) with Pastor Aaron Hines officiating. At her request, there will be no calling hours. If desired, memorial contributions may be made to the Ross Co. Humane Society, 2308-A Lick Run Rd., Chillicothe, OH 45601.
