Helen Harris

Helen Joann Harris, 90, of Chillicothe, Ohio died at her residence Wednesday, April 27, 2022 after an extended illness.

She was born May 18, 1931 in Chillicothe to the late William and Jesse Payne. On July 18, 1949 she married the late Archie Paul Harris.

To the union was born nine children including two surviving sons, Archie Harris Jr., Chillicothe, and Stephen Harris, Lexington, KY; six surviving daughters, Mrs. Anthony (Gwen) Hairston, and Melinda Harris, both of Chillicothe, Mrs. James (Kathy) Newsome, and Ms. Janice Heath, both of Columbus, Mrs. Todd (Diane) Gray, Richmond, VA, and Mrs. Ronald (Myra) Durham, of Ypsilanti, MI. She is also survived by 14 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren, 6 great-great-grandchildren; a brother, William Payne, and a sister, Shirley Gore, both of Columbus; several nieces, nephews, along with a host of relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Archie P. Harris; a daughter, Alesia Jean Harris, one brother, and four sisters.

Mrs. Harris worked for Harts Department Store, and Chillicothe Schools for over 30 years. She also worked for the Board of Elections.

She was a member of the Ebenezer Baptist Church where she was the Choir Director, a Sunday School Teacher, and Christmas Play Director. Upon Ebenezer's closing, she became a member of Zion Baptist Church and was a member of First Baptist Church for 18 years where she was a member of the Senior Saints Choir.

A funeral service will be held at 12:00pm on Tuesday, May 3, 2022 at the First Baptist Church, Pastor Eric Carson presiding, and Rev. F. Todd Gray, Eulogist. Burial will follow in Twin Township Cemetery. Friends may call from 10:00am until the time of the service at the church.
