Harvey Howison

Harvey W Howison, 68, of Chillicothe, died at 5:27pm, Saturday August 16, 2014 at his home, following a 3 month illness. Harvey was born June 21, 1946 in Chillicothe to Harvey F. and Lillian "Lil" Howison, who predeceased him. He was also predeceased by a step brother, Harlan "Buddy" Starkey. On August 21, 2004 Harvey married the love of his life, June Pinney Howison, who survives. Also surviving are his son Sean (Mandy) Howison and grandson Quinlin Howison of Pittsburgh Pennsylvania, his brother Tom Howison of Chillicothe, nieces and nephews: Kelly Depugh, Robbie Starkey, Scott Starkey, Tommy Bayer, Tammy Bayer, and Amanda Howison. Harvey graduated from Chillicothe High School is 1964. He received a Bachelor of Science in Education from Ohio University in 1974 and a Master of Education in Education Administration from Xavier University in 1985. When he returned from serving in the army, he worked at the Mead for 7 years. He served in the United States Army. Harvey Howison – A Premier Correctional Educator and Leader in the Ohio Central School System Harvey started his legendary leadership in the Ohio Central School System in December of 1976 as a reading teacher at the Chillicothe Correctional Institution. His work with the functionally illiterate student body was exceptional and his methods were pioneering. After receiving his Master's Degree, Harvey was promoted to Guidance Counselor and School Supervisor. In 1987 he was hired as the first Regional Principal for Region Six of the Ohio Central School System. He served in this position for all the prison schools in southern Ohio, including the opening of the prison school at the Ross Correctional Institution. He retired with distinction as Region Six Principal in 2002. The Department of Education stated to the School Superintendent that under Harvey's leadership "the quality of education in his Region was at the highest level they had ever witnessed in any school district in the entire State of Ohio." Harvey was also a national leader in the Correctional Education Association. He was highly admired by his colleagues from prison schools all around the country. He was a Correctional Education Legend! Harvey's home, known to many as "Mollywood", was a gathering place for family and friends, a place where everyone was welcomed. Harv was an avid bowler in his younger days, loved to read, enjoyed golfing, and was a fan of the Cincinnati Reds, the Cincinnati Bengals, and of course his favorite team, The Ohio State Buckeyes. Funeral services will be held 1:00 pm Thursday at the Haller Funeral Home, Rev. Lori Lossie officiating. A military tribute will then be offered by the Ross County Veterans Honor Guard.
