Harry Raines

June 22, 1924 — November 26, 2011

Harry Raines was born on June 22, 1924 in Matewan, West Virginia to the late Christopher Columbus and Ona Belle (Steele) Raines. He died on November 26, 2011 at Heartland of Chillicothe, following a lengthy illness. Harry had five brothers and two sisters, all of whom are deceased. He lived in West Virginia and Kentucky during his childhood, mostly in coal mining towns, because his father was a coal miner. He enlisted in the United States Navy on June 4, 1943 and served until he was honorably discharged on March 15, 1946. After serving in the Navy, he lived in Detroit, Michigan, Cleveland, Ohio, and other parts of Ohio before coming to Chillicothe. He worked for many years at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Chillicothe, and remained in Chillicothe after his retirement. Harry cared for his mother, and for several of his brothers, who lived in Chillicothe, until they died. He is remembered by his family as a kind and gentle person, who was an avid reader. He loved his family and was able to make the lives of his mother and brothers better during their declining years. He enjoyed life and always tried to make the best of his life, even though he was not well in his later years. He is survived by his daughter, Linda (Raines) Peterson, of Toledo Ohio, his niece, Wadine Gehrke, his nephews, George, and Dan Blankenship, who all live in Colorado with their families. He will be missed by his family and friends and will always be in our hearts. A military graveside service, conducted by the Ross Co. Veterans Honor Guard, will be held at the Greenlawn Cemetery in Chillicothe, Ohio on Wednesday, December 7, 2011 at 11:00 a.m., under the direction of the Haller Funeral Home.
