Harry E. Matheny, 89, of Chillicothe, died 3:35 pm, Sunday, March 26, 2017, at his son's home, surrounded by his loving family, following a brief illness. He was born October 31, 1927 in Adams County to the late Homer and Ocie McGowan Matheny. He married Clara L. Michaels, who died February 22, 2009. Survivors include his son, R. Douglas (Missy) Matheny, Chillicothe; stepchildren, Gerald (C.J.) Congrove Jr., of Chillicothe, Vicki Congrove, of Toledo, and Charles Congrove, of New Marshfield, OH; 7 grandchildren, Angela (Hoyt) Martin, Cindy (Josh) Dresbach, Beth (David) Chaffin, Caleb (Gretchen), and Autumn Congrove, and Collin and Catherine Matheny; 11 great-grandchildren; brothers, Ray (Doris) Matheny, Lucasville, Ronnie (Shirley) Matheny, Waverly, and Leo Matheny, Peebles; sisters, Audrey Mitchell, Peebles, and Pauline (Jerry) Campbell, Phoenix, and Juanita Fitzgerald, Portsmouth; and several nieces, nephews, and in-laws. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Calvin and Paul Matheny; and a sister, Geneva Clements. Harry was a 60 year member of the IBEW and retired from Horizon Chillicothe Telephone, where he had worked for many years. He was a skilled hunter, fisherman and trap shooter. Harry was always helping others, and was known for helping to provide for his brothers and sisters when they were young, helping those less fortunate, often anonymously, and always had a piece of candy to pass out to children at church or school functions. He will be missed by his friends at his daily McDonalds coffee stop. Harry was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, where the Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11:00 am Friday, Rev. Lawrence Hummer, Celebrant. Burial will follow in St. Margaret Cemetery. Friends may call 5-8 pm Thursday at the Haller Funeral Home & Crematory, where a prayer service will be held at 8:00 pm.
