Harold Bates

Harold W. Bates, 66, of Chillicothe, died at 3:19pm Monday, June 24, 2013, at Adena Regional Medical Center, following a brief illness. He was born January 19, 1947, in Uniontown, PA, to the late Harold and Martha (Lewellen) Bates. In December 1970, he married the former Mary M. North, who survives. Also surviving are his daughters and sons-in-law: Melanie (Sam) Walters, Chillicothe; Kelli (Jason) Hutchison, Circleville; grandchildren: Molli and Jenni Walters; and Elliana and Emma Hutchison; his brother Sam (Maria) Bates, Jackson, MO; sister Colleen Bates, of Illinois; brothers-in-law David (Patty) North, Sr.; Jim (Edith) North; sisters-in-law Eileen (Steve) Sinclair; Judi (Lee) Dickerson; Kim (Gary) Mickle; nieces and nephews: Clarissa, Kevin, David, Jr., Shane, James, Marci, Amy, Chad, Mel, Chris and Michael; his aunt and uncle Art & Phyllis Lewellen; and many other extended family members, including a special cousin Genie Mascioli. He was predeceased by his mother, father and step-mother Sabina Bates. Mr. Bates was a retired mathematics teacher. He earned his Bachelor's Degree from California State College in Pennsylvania and taught at Chillicothe High School from 1968 until his retirement in 2005. He continued educating students with the Paint Valley School District. He also coached boys basketball throughout most of his teaching career with the Chillicothe School System as well as with Paint Valley. Harold was dedicated to his family and to his sports. Of late, he enjoyed attending his grandchildren's sporting events. Funeral services will be held at 11:00am Saturday, June 29, at the Haller Funeral Home, with Pastor Shannon Brumfield officiating. Burial will follow in St. Margaret Cemetery. Friends may call Friday from 5-8pm at Haller Funeral Home.
