Gregory Charles Shope, Sr., 66, of Wilmington, passed away Monday evening, January 5, 2026, at Ohio Hospice of Dayton, following an extended illness.
He was born February 17, 1959, in Portsmouth, Ohio, son of Harry Shope and Kathleen (Ramsey) Vassar. On August 26, 1978, he married his beloved wife, Anita Robin Shope.
In addition to his mother and wife, also surviving are three sons, Gregory (Lizzy) Shope, Jr., Nicholas Shope, and Daniel (Leanna Robe) Shope; beloved grandchildren, Angelina and Robert Shope, as well as Marilyn, Ceara, Marley, Ireland, Abigail, Autumn, Caden, Addison, Cody, and Lily; step-mother, Mary Shope; his sisters, Greta (Rich Warnock) Shope Dupuy, Alison (Bart) Shope Thornton, Beverly (Bob) Shope Stringer, Angela (Tom) Shope Lore; two step-brothers, Fred Malone and Tim Malone; his best friend, Jeff Gullet; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends. In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by an infant son, Andrew Shope; his mother and father-in-law, Georgia and Dewey Smith; his paternal grandparents, Logan and Esther Shope; and his maternal grandparents, Virgil and Marguerite Ramsey.
Greg was an honorably discharged veteran of the United States Army. He was a former member of the Portsmouth VFW before moving to the Wilmington, Ohio area with his family. In his free time, he enjoyed watching sports, especially the Ohio State Buckeyes. He was also passionate about music and enjoyed playing Solitaire on his phone.
Visitation for family and friends will be held on Saturday, January 17, 2026 at the Haller Funeral Home from 2:00pm-4:00pm.
