SOUTHFIELD, MI: Dr. Mickey was born to the late William and Madge Brown Mickey, and reared in Chillicothe, Ohio. He used his skills as a basketball player to secure an education. After an award-winning career at Chillicothe High School, where he was named a High School Basketball All-American and where he still holds the all-time scoring record, he received an athletic scholarship to Indiana University in Bloomington, where he graduated in 1962. He was drafted by the Detroit Pistons but choose to further his education. He was married to Rosie Ann Cheatham from 1962 until her death in 1996. During their marriage they lived in Indianapolis, where he taught in the city's school system before leaving to pursue further education. In 1971, he earned a doctorate in Special Education, also from Indiana University, and accepted a position with the Delaware Department of Education. From there, the Mickey's moved to Ohio. In Lorain, he was Superintendent of schools for Murray Ridge Schools before relocating to Akron where he worked for Akron Public Schools as a principal at North High School. Dr. Mickey also worked for Stow Public Schools and Indianapolis Public schools before retiring in 1996. His retirement years were spent in Southfield, Michigan enjoying his children and grandchildren. He was an attentive and doting granddad and enjoyed playing volleyball on the senior citizens league. He was an active member at Hope United Methodist Church in Southfield where he served missions, Comfort Givers, New Membership and Christian Education. He also visited Lasher Hills Nursing home and provided spiritual counseling and comfort to individuals there. He is survived by his son, Miguel and daughter, Madganna Wilson; his grandchildren, Jordan, Canaan and Justin Mickey and Sydnee Wilson, of West Bloomfield and Westland, Michigan respectively. His surviving siblings in Chillicothe are Frank Mickey, Harry Mickey, Betty Mickey and her son and daughter Elaina and Elijiah. He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers and sisters, Paul Burke Jr., Mary Chandler, Gale Mickey, William Mickey Jr., twins Donald and Ronald Mickey and Charles Mickey. He is also mourned by his brother and sister-in-law, Reginald Cheatham, who passed away two days after him, and Janet Cheatham Bell and numerous nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held at Haley Funeral Directors, 24525 Northwestern Highway, Southfield, MI 48075 on Monday, December 27th from 4:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, December 28th at Hope United Methodist Church, 26275 Northwestern Highway, Southfield, MI 48075. The family hour is at 10:00 a.m., followed by Funeral Services at 11:00 a.m. Burial will be at Greenlawn Cemetery in Chillicothe at 2 p.m. on Wednesday ,December 29, 2010. Fellowship will be at First Baptist Church following burial. In lieu of flowers, donations made to the We Believe Campaign of Hope United Methodist Church in memory of Dr. Mickey will be greatly appreciated.
