Gertrude Cousins

Gertrude M. Cousins, 98, died at 4:20am Sunday, March 4, 2018, at Heartland of Chillicothe, following a brief illness.   She was born November 17, 1919, in Ross County to the late Elijah and Blanche (Hitchens) Austin. On November 11, 1952, she married Warren G. Cousins, who preceded her in death in 1964.   Surviving are her sisters and brother-in-law: Aretta Valentine and Sylvia Tanner, both of Chillicothe; Bessie Thornton, Pittsburgh, PA; and Connie (Brenton) Austin, Canal Winchester; brothers and sisters-in-law George Austin, of Columbus, Homer (Kay) Austin, Frankfort, John (Carole) Austin and Richard Austin, all of Chillicothe; and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins, including Joyce Smith, Josephine Latimer, Carol Stewart, John Stewart and Michael Steed. She was predeceased by her step-mother Ellen (Saunders) Austin; sisters: Alberta Cousins, Ruth Stewart, Charlotte Vaughan, and Shirley Smith; and brothers: Bonfiles, Enos and Elijah Austin.   Ms. Austin was a member of First Baptist Church. She retired from the VA Medical Center where she worked as a dietician.   Graveside services will be held at 11am Wednesday, March 7, in Greenlawn Cemetery with Elder Clifford Brown officiating, under the direction of Haller Funeral Home & Crematory.
