George E. Sparks, 85, of Chillicothe, died July 8, 2014, at Berger Hospital following a brief illness. He was born March 21, 1929, to the late Fred E. and Alyce M. (Monahan) Sparks. He was predeceased by his wife of 41 years, Ellen M. (Riley) Sparks, who died December 15, 1994. In addition to his wife and parents, he was predeceased by his brother-in-law James Riley. Surviving is his daughter Rebecca K. Hitchens; a sister Pat Barnes; and brothers Richard (Audrey) Sparks and David (Donna) Sparks, all of Chillicothe; and several nieces and nephews. George was the owner of the Patriot Gun and Coin Shop for 40 years. Prior to this, he was employed by DuPont and the Mead Paper Co. He was a life member of the Ohio Gun Collectors Assoc. and the NRA. He was a 60 year member Scioto Lodge #6, F & AM, the Aladdin Shriners and the Ross Co. Shrine Club. He graduated from Centralia High School, Class of 1947, and earned his Bachelor's Degree from Ohio University in 1951. He served his country in the US Army during the Korean conflict as a tank commander. Military graveside services, conducted by the Ross Co. Veterans Honor Guard, will be held at 1:30pm Friday, July 11, in Floral Hills Memory Gardens with Rev. Fred Fox officiating. Friends may call 5-8pm Thursday at Haller Funeral Home.
