George Allen Shoemaker, 87, of Chillicothe, formerly of Bourneville, died January 4, 2012, at the Adena Regional Medical Center, following an extended illness. He was born May 1, 1924 in Bourneville to Edwin and Mae (Schumaker) Shoemaker. Survivors include his children, Patricia (James) Hedrick, of Grove City and Kathy (Robert) Hatfield, of Chillicothe; step-children, James (Wendy) Hafner, of Myrtle Beach, SC and Patricia Hayhow, of Texas; 8 grandchildren, Angie (Steve) Sherrick, Shelia (Jeff) Runkle, Christy (Todd) Fannin, Rob (Karina) Hatfield, Allen (Kelly), Mike, Tony and Heath (Tara) Shoemaker; 19 great-grandchildren; 4 sisters, Norma (Kenny) Sollars, Pat (Gene) Wisecup, Lois Peabody, and Wanda Caplinger; a brother, Duke (Sue) Rinehart; a daughter-in-law, Rita Shoemaker; several nieces and nephews and special friends Kenny and Carol Cottrill. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Dorothy Fox and his second wife, Thelma Jean Hafner; a son, William Shoemaker; and a sister, Eunice Childers. Mr. Shoemaker was a mechanic with the State of Ohio Highway Department. He was a World War II Army veteran and was an avid bowler, fisherman and enjoyed playing horseshoes. But the real joy of his life was his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held 1:00 pm Sunday at the Haller Funeral Home, Pastor Roger Webb officiating. Military graveside services, conducted by the Ross Co. Veterans Honor Guard, will follow in Twin Township Cemetery. Friends may call 4-7 pm Saturday at Haller's. Memorial contributions may be made to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
