Frank Hirsch
September 5, 1940 — February 3, 2024
Frank Hirsch, 83, passed away peacefully from this life at his home at 6:01 p.m. on February 3, 2024. While his death was somewhat unexpected, he had courageously battled several setbacks over the past several months.
He was born September 5, 1940, in Ross County to the late J. Leo and Theresa (Bigler) Hirsch. On December 14, 1994, he married the former Judith E. Beck Mowrey, who survives.
As an alumna of Catholic Central High School's Class of 1958, Frank attained his BS in Horticulture from the Ohio State University in 1962. He was a member of the Alpha Gamma Rho fraternity where he developed many lifelong friendships. Returning home, he became a third-generation owner and operator of Hirsch Fruit Farm where he lived and worked his entire life. He instilled his incomparable work-ethic and sense of loyalty in his children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews as well as others who had the opportunity to work their first job on the farm.
Prioritizing faith, family and education, he generously contributed his time and energy serving on parish council and as an usher, lector and eucharistic minister at St. Mary Catholic Church; president and board member, booster club president and festival co-chairperson of Bishop Flaget High School; president of Adena Regional Medical Center Board of Directors; and president of several agricultural organizations including Ross County Farm Bureau, Ohio Fruit Grower's Society, and Ross County Farmers' Club. He was recognized for his many contributions as 1965 K of C Knight of the Year, 1965 Kiwanis Layman of the Year, and 1975 Jaycees Citizen of the Year.
In 1988, he was elected as Ross County Commissioner and served his community for 24 years as a bipartisan collaborator and communicator who got things done. In that role, he contributed as a board member of the Ohio Valley Regional Development Commission, Ross County Planning Commission and South Central Regional Juvenile Detention Center.
Woven throughout these accomplishments and contributions was Frank's genuine care for people. His kindness, generosity and enthusiasm for life were well known. He greeted everyone with a handshake or a hug, then asked about you, your family and your interests. He was always congenial and made you feel comfortable and valued. He left you thinking you were glad you saw him that day!
In addition to his wife Judy, he is survived by children: Theresa "Terri" (John) Schueth, of Indianapolis, IN, Stephen (Kim) Hirsch, Chillicothe, Lisa Hirsch (Tom McDonough), of Ann Arbor, MI, Laura Jo (Lew) Vollmar, Kingston, and Michael (Carrie) Hirsch, Chillicothe; stepchildren: Beth (Jorge) Castaneda, of Lebanon, OH, Bryan (Donna) Mowrey, of Washington Twp., IN, and Andy Mowrey, of Murray, KY; grandchildren: Elizabeth Schueth (fiancé Jeff Hauser), Stephen Schueth, Jacob Hirsch, David Hirsch, Stephanie Hirsch, Abby McDonough, Anthony McDonough, Daniel McDonough, Dalton Vollmar, Dillon Vollmar, Katie Hirsch, Meredith Hirsch, Frankie Hirsch and Calvin Hirsch; step-grandchildren: Jami (James) Steedley, Courtney Maxwell, Sarah (Kevin) Page, Natalie (Grant) Lewis; 10 step-great-grandchildren; his sister Rita (Mike) Hutt, of Tempe, AZ; sisters-in-law Linda Hirsch, of Frankfort and Linda Hirsch, of Indianapolis, IN; the mother of his children Laura "Becky" Burns; his cousin and business partner of over 50 years Dick (Betty) Ginther; numerous nieces and nephews; and Frank considered himself like a second father to Charles "Chip" Campbell.
Along with his parents, Frank was preceded in death by sisters Cecelia and Agnes Hirsch; and brothers John "Jack" Hirsch, Clarence Hirsch and Bernard "Bub" Hirsch.
He was passionate about certain causes and believed that if you have the ability to help someone or a situation, you should do so.
