Esther Bell Hughes, 89, of Columbus, went Home to be with the Lord early Wednesday morning, June 15, 2022 at her home, following an extended illness.
She was born July 1, 1932 in Chillicothe, Ohio, daughter of the late Raymond and Julia (Glassco) Lett. She married John L. Hughes, Sr., who preceded her in death in 2002.
Surviving are their three children, Maria (Donald) Ragland, Deborah Kay Carter, and John Hughes, Jr.; her grandson, John Hughes, III, who she raised; as well as 11 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren, and 5 great-great-grandchildren. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Ray and John Lett, and a son-in-law, Lewis Carter.
Esther worked as a bus driver for Columbus City Schools for more than 30 years before retiring. Following her retirement, she went to work for the Gahanna School District as a bus driver before retiring at the age of 80. In her free time, she loved making ceramics, pottery, and sewing. She also enjoyed taking trips to the casino.
A funeral service will be held on Monday, June 20, 2022 at 12:00pm with the Rev. Bennie T. Henson officiating. Friends may join the family for visitation from 11:00am until the time of the service.
