Donald Allen Russell

Donald A. Russell, a respected business leader, devoted family man, master woodworker and cherished friend, passed away peacefully on August 1, 2026, at his home in Chillicothe, Ohio, at the age of 91. He was surrounded by the love of his daughters, Debbie and Karen, in his final moments. 

Born and raised in Chillicothe, Don was the son of James and Naomi Russell and spent hischildhood on Madeira Avenue. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 69 years, Janet Smith Russell, who passed away in November 2025, as well as his parents and his brother, Robert Russell.

Don's life was defined by a remarkable combination of professional achievement, community service, unwavering devotion to family, and a gift for friendship. A 1953 graduate of Chillicothe High School, He went on to earn a degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Cincinnati in 1958, launching a distinguished career with The Mead Corporation.

Beginning as an engineer at Mead's Chillicothe plant, Don steadily rose through the company's ranks, earning the respect of colleagues and employees alike through his leadership, integrity, and ability to inspire others. His career took him and his family to Dayton, Ohio; St. Joseph and Escanaba, Michigan; and Kingsport, Tennessee. Wherever they lived, Don and Janet built lasting friendships and became active members of their communities. He ultimately served as General Manager of both the Kingsport and Chillicothe Mead plants, concluding an extraordinary career that left a lasting impact on the company and the communities it served. 

While his professional accomplishments were significant, Don's greatest joy was always his family. He was a devoted husband to Janet, his childhood sweetheart whom he married in 1957, and a loving father and grandfather. He took particular pride in his grandsons, Matt and James McJunkin, spending countless hours building Pinewood Derby cars, crafting playhouses for school fundraisers, and enthusiastically supporting their athletic pursuits. Alongside Janet and Debbie, he rarely missed a swim meet, football game, or lacrosse match. As a special tribute to his grandfather, Matt proudly wore Don's football number, 59, throughout his high school football career.

Retirement for Don just meant a new chapter. He, along with his trusty co-worker, his daughter Deb, spent countless hours at his beloved workshop creating woodworking masterpieces for family and friends, including the “book” for Chillicothe’s annual Christmas lights in the park, trail signs for the Great Seal park, a new door for the Chillicothe Firehouse, and even septic treatment cabinets for his grandson James’ start-up company. When asked if he could make or fix something his answer was always “yes” and “let’s get a new tool”.

Don embraced life with enthusiasm and gratitude. He and Janet shared memorable adventures with friends, traveling to England and Ireland, exploring Wyoming, and spending time on the Chesapeake Bay, where they kept a boat and hosted countless fishing trips and excursions. In Chillicothe, he treasured simple pleasures just as much as grand adventures, especially mornings spent sharing laughter, conversation, and a Tim Horton’s Vanilla Iced Capp with close friends. These friendships remained a source of strength and joy throughout his life.

Those who knew Don will remember his indomitable spirit, boundless energy, warm smile, and ability to make every gathering brighter simply by being present. He never met a stranger, loved a good party, and possessed a rare gift for making people feel valued and welcome. His resilience, optimism, and generosity touched countless lives.

Don leaves behind his daughters, Debbie and Karen and son-in-law, John; his grandsons, Matt and James McJunkin and granddaughter-in-law, Lauren; extended family members; and a wide circle of friends whose lives were enriched by knowing him. Though he will be deeply missed, his family takes comfort in the extraordinary example he set and the many cherished memories he created.

A private family burial will be held on August 11, 2026 with a celebration of life to be announced at a later date.
