Donald Coppel

Donald F. Coppel, 93, of Chillicothe, died 8:25 pm, March 23, 2015, at National Church Residences-Chillicothe. He was born February 4, 1922 in Chillicothe to the late Harry T. and Mary Dunlap Coppel. On September 25, 1944 he married the former Patricia Evans, who preceded him in death March 27, 2014. Survivors include two sons, Donald F. "Pete" (Lisa) Coppel Jr., Austin, TX and Stephen (Lisa) Coppel, Chillicothe, OH; six grandchildren, Joseph, Sam, Christopher, Madison Leigh, Kelli and Cole Coppel; and eight great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife; a son, Charlie Coppel; and a grandchild, Landis Coppel. Don owned and operated Coppel Coal and Supply for 70 years. He was a US Navy Officer and navigator aboard the ship USS Trumpeter during World War II. He graduated from Denison University with a degree in engineering, and was president of his fraternity, Sigma Alpha Epsilon. Don was also a real estate broker with Kear Realty, a Toast Master and member of Scioto Lodge 6 F & AM. Cop had served as president of the Chillicothe Country Club and the Homebuilder's Association. He was a member of the Kiwanis Club and the BPOE 52. He was a partner in Sunrush Enterprises property development. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church. Don enjoyed playing golf and cards, and was an avid OSU fan. Private funeral services will be held at the Haller Funeral Home, Rev. James Grove officiating. Burial will follow in Grandview Cemetery. Family and friends are welcome to a gathering in his honor at the Elks Lodge from 2:30 – 6:30 pm Tuesday, March 31, 2015.
