David Minney, 63, passed on August 16, 2021. He was born in Williamson, West Virginia and later moved to Chillicothe, Ohio with parents Linda and Eugene Minney. He was preceded in death by his father and is survived by his wife, Jarel Lynne Bartig, son Coleman Minney, daughter Leslie Minney, mother Linda Minney, brother John (Carol) Minney, Uncle Johnny (Anita) Kirk, Aunts La Donna (Bill) Kirk, Devra (Brian) Roberts, nephew Zach Roberts, and in-laws Gerald and Sharon Bartig and their daughter Wendy Vickers. He is also survived by many dear friends and will be missed by his dog Flora.
He went to Chillicothe Highschool and participated in track, football, basketball, and gymnastics, and was a gymnastics instructor at the Ross County YMCA. He graduated from West Virginia University in 1980 with a Bachelor of Science from the College of Agriculture and Forestry and attended the University of Idaho. After college he went to work for the Ohio Civilian Conservation Corps, then spent most of his career working for the Ohio Chapter of The Nature Conservancy to oversee the management of five preserves and to lead their Fire Program focusing on conservation of rare plant communities and the oak ecosystems of southeast Ohio. He was an accomplished naturalist with skills in plant and bird identification and contributed to conservation efforts at Crane Hollow Nature Preserve in the Hocking Hills, Ross County Park District, Tar Hollow and Zaleski State Forests, cofounded the Scioto Valley Bird and Nature Club, and served as a Board Advisor for the Arc of Appalachia. He spent decades researching the relationship between climate, humans, fire, and regional vegetation patterns across southeast Ohio 12,000 years ago to present.
He was happiest at home taking care of his land in eastern Pike County where he lived a simple and quiet life with his wife raising a big garden, gathering and cooking wild foods, tending chickens, and hunting mushrooms. He had an artistic flair and dabbled in pen and ink nature drawings and wood carving. He enjoyed music and dancing, a wonderful circle of friends, and sharing and teaching about his interests to his son and daughter. Coleman now follows in his father's footsteps as a manager of a local nature preserve. Leslie's exposure to the natural world has led her to work on conflict resolution by building resilience and cooperation in communities affected by environmental challenges.
An outside memorial is being held at 2:00pm on Saturday, September 18, 2021 at the Great Seal State Park in the Vista Shelter, located at 4908 Marietta Rd., Chillicothe, OH 45601; there will be no calling hours.
