Cristina Jayne

March 15, 1935 — July 22, 2025

Cristina Marie (Marsh) Jayne, 90, of Chillicothe, passed away Tuesday, July 22, 2025 at the Adena Regional Medical Center with her children by her side.

She was born March 15, 1935, in Chillicothe, Ohio, to the late Herbert Marsh and Letitia M. (Carruth) Stone. She became very close to her step-mother, Alice (Greenbaum) Marsh. On June 12, 1965, she married the late George Peter Jayne.

She is survived by her two children, Catherine (Jayne) Hall, of Chillicothe and George Patrick Jayne, of Baltimore, Ohio; grandchildren, Conner and Julia Hall of Chillicothe, Ohio; sister, Grace Lee (Marsh) Bockman, of Kingsport, Tennessee; sisters-in-law, Roberta Cunningham of Ormond Beach, Florida, and Nancy Matushoneck, of Morristown, New Jersey; and many nieces and nephews; and special friends, Judy Trainer, Brenna Adkins, and Kim Howard. In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by her son-in-law, Dwane Hall, sisters-in-law, Patsy Ward and Lorena Risch; and brothers-in-law, John Jayne, Hudson Jayne, and Patrick Jayne.

Cristina had many interests through the years including training and showing Weimaraners in dog shows, a highlight being a handler at Madison Square Gardens in New York City; square dancing, sewing, knitting, and playing bridge. She and her sister enjoyed entering bazaars to sell their knitted handiwork. They called themselves the Senior Knitizens. It was a pastime she continued to the end, passing out her dishcloths to those who cared for her at Adena. Her great love was bridge club. Special thanks to Suzie Bennett, Annette Damico, Joyce Graves, Linda Hardin, Grace Rotter, Pam Peters, and Judy Vetter who brought bridge to her when she was no longer able to go to them.

Cristina was a born teacher. She babysat as a young girl and was sought after because of the special way she had with children. She graduated from Ohio University and began teaching elementary school at Kingston in 1957. She moved to Chillicothe City Schools in the early sixties where she taught at Mount Logan, McArthur, and finally Tiffin Elementary. She had a passion for children and for teaching. She cared deeply, often taking food to help a child get through the weekend. She was especially proud of starting the annual fifth-grade camping trip to Woodland Altars for outdoor education. So many students have commented that she developed a love of reading in them; that she was strict but loved her students deeply; that she changed their lives. Cristina retired in 1998 with 34 years of service. During that service she served as CEA President, was honored as a Martha Holden Jennings Scholar, and belonged to Delta Kappa Gamma teaching sorority. After retiring, she spent many years volunteering to help children learn to read at Worthington Elementary School. Above all, Cris was a wonderful mother and grandmother. She was actively involved in the lives of her children and grandchildren and never missed a music event, sporting event, or school event. Her genuine love and authenticity were felt in everything she did.

The family would like to especially thank Dr. Mal and Nr. Ngalle for their compassion and honesty, as well as the incredible team of nurses and nurse techs of Unit 2NE at Adena Regional for everything they did for Cristina. Their commitment and care for their patients and the respect they showed Cristina will always be remembered.
