Charles Griffin

Reverend Charles Richard Griffin died Monday, March 12, 2012. The son of John Patrick and Maree Fleming Griffin, he was born December 28, 1928 in Columbus, Ohio. He is preceded in death by his parents; brothers John "Jack" and Robert Griffin; and brother-in-law John Keating. He is survived by his sisters Jeanne Keating, Rochester Hills, MI; and Joanne (Frank) Matey, Malvern, PA; and several nieces, nephews and their children. Fr. Griffin attended Holy Name Elementary School, Columbus; St. Charles High School and College, where he received his B.A. in Philosophy. He then attended St. Vincent Seminary, Latrobe, PA, earning a Masters of Divinity degree. Fr. Griffin was ordained May 26, 1956, by Most Reverend Michael J. Ready at St. Joseph Cathedral in Columbus. Fr. Griffin served as Assistant Pastor at Sacred Heart Church, Coshocton and Area Chaplain for the Boy Scouts for the Catholic Committee on Scouting (1956-58). He was Assistant Pastor at Sacred Heart Church, Columbus (1958-66), during which time he served as an instructor at St. Francis DeSales High School. He served as Pastor of St. Sylvester Church, Zaleski from 1968-80 and Ordinary Confessor for the Franciscan Sisters of Charity at St. Peter and Paul Convent, Wellston (1968-69). Fr. Griffin was Associate Pastor at St. Peter Church, Chillicothe and Chaplain of Chillicothe Correctional Institution from 1981 until his retirement in 1999. He continued throughout his retirement to assist at St. Peter Church and visit the inmates of the Ross County Correctional Institution and assisted on weekends at St. Mary, Queen of the Mission Church, Waverly. The body of Father Griffin will be received at St. Peter Church, 118 Church St., Chillicothe, at 5:00pm on Thursday, March 15th, after which calling hours will continue until 8pm. Friends may also call at St. Peter Church on Friday, March 16th at 9am until the funeral Mass, which will begin at 11:00am Bishop Frederick F. Campbell will be the principal celebrant and homilist; Bishop James A. Griffin will concelebrate. Interment will be at 2:30pm Friday in St. Joseph Cemetery, Lockbourne, following a luncheon in the parish social hall. Arrangements are under the direction of Haller Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be to either: St. Vincent DePaul Society of St. Peter Church, or St. Peter Church, addressed to the Parish Office at 122 Church St., Chillicothe, OH 45601
