Catherine Maria Cunningham, 77, of Chillicothe, finally made it Home to be with the Lord, following a lengthy battle with illness on Saturday, April 9, 2022.
She was born November 27, 1944 in Chillicothe, daughter of the late William and Mae (Wingo) Cunningham.
Surviving are her siblings, Carolyn Thomas, Wilmetta Austin, JoAnn Cunningham, Zelma (Kenneth) Jackson, and William (Iona) Cunningham; her goddaughter, Sandra Lawrence; special great-nephew, Andre Cunningham; close friend, Rev. Dr. J. Troy Gray; an aunt, Esther Cunningham; as well as numerous other nieces, nephews, and extended family members. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers-in-law, Dudley Thomas, and Larry Austin; a niece, Jovannah Cunningham; a nephew, Tracy Austin; an uncle, Harry Cunningham; and her best friend, Bertie Hinton.
Maria was a lifetime member of the Zion Baptist Church in Chillicothe, where she formerly served as Deaconess. She loved spending her time singing in the Church Choir, helping with the Christmas giveaway, assisted as a membership care coordinator, as well as with the Little Buds group in the church. She was also a volunteer with Another Chance Ministries where she enjoyed interacting with the members. She was best known in the Chillicothe area for carrying her staff, passing out church pamphlets around the community, and ministering to anyone in need at the local area nursing homes. She had a deep love of helping people, especially those on the south end of Chillicothe, and was known to be a bold, straightforward woman of God with a loving heart. She will be greatly missed by all who had the opportunity to know her.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00am on Saturday, April 23, 2022 at the Zion Baptist Church in Chillicothe with Rev. Dr. J. Troy Gray officiating. Burial will follow in Greenlawn Cemetery.
