Carroll Lee Brooks, 88, of Chillicothe, Ohio, passed away on June 28, 2026, with family by his side.
Carroll was born on April 3, 1938, in Page, West Virginia, to Rachel Ellen (Friend) Brooks and Walter Lee Brooks. He dedicated many years of service to the Mead Paper Plant before becoming self-employed as the co-owner of Brooks Camping Center and later working as a salesperson and manager for 44 years. He also served as a manager for the U.S. Census from 1990 to 2016 and was employed by the Ross County Senior Citizens Center for eight years. Demonstrating his lifelong commitment to learning, Carroll earned an associate degree from Ohio University in 1992.
Carroll proudly served in the United States Army from 1961 to 1963, attaining the rank of Specialist Fourth Class (SP4), a distinction recognizing his technical expertise. He was stationed at Fort Knox, Kentucky.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 62 years, Jo Ann (Bell) Brooks; his children, Steve (Joy) Brooks, Phil (Beth) Brooks, and Becky (Charlie) Jordan; and his brother, Bob Brooks. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Julie (Blake) Metzger, Olivia Brooks, Josh (Peyton) Brooks, Jeremy Brooks, Meghan (Matthew) Rojas, Jenna Jordan, Garrett Brooks, Jake Jordan, Jett Jordan; and his great-grandchildren, Hayden, Brooks, and Maddox Metzger.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his sisters, Jane (Brooks) Fadden and Sharon (Brooks) Dalrymple.
Throughout his life, Carroll found great joy in boating, camping, fishing, dancing with his wife, model trains, and car racing. He cherished time spent outdoors, served as chairman of First Capitol Campers No. 511 of the National Campers and Hikers Association, and enjoyed sharing his interests with family and friends. Known for his positive outlook on life, Carroll was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend whose kindness, wisdom, and sense of humor touched many lives.
He was actively involved with the Boy Scouts of America as a Cubmaster with Pack 8 at Western School for many years. He earned his Wood Badge and enjoyed mentoring young men at Chief Logan Boy Scout Camp. He was a lifetime member of AMVETS Post 4 and the Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie #600. He served on the executive board of American Legion Post 62 and enjoyed being the announcer for its baseball team.
Carroll's greatest pride was his family, and he was deeply loved and will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him. His legacy of perseverance, optimism, and devotion to those he cared about will continue to inspire future generations.
Funeral services will be held at Haller Funeral Home on July 6, 2026. Visitation will be from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., followed by the funeral service at 1:00 p.m. Burial will follow at Grandview Cemetery, with Military Honors by the Ross County Veterans Association.
