Carl R. Smith, 78, of Chillicothe, died at 10:05pm April 16, 2009, in the Ohio State University Medical Center, Columbus, following a brief illness. He was born March 27, 1931, in Chillicothe to the late Ophia A. and Marjorie A. Hough Smith. On May 21, 1955, he married the former Bonnie L. Merritt, who survives. Also surviving are his children: Tony (Kathy) Smith; Theresa Smith (Wayne Collins), all of Chillicothe; Anne (Tony) Justice, Toledo; Tim Smith; Tom Smith; Alan (Kim) Smith; Amy Hatmacher (Don Williams); and Mark Smith, all of Chillicothe; grandchildren: Kevin, Brandon and Kristen Smith; Tim (Lori) Anderson, Jr.; Derek and Elena Justice; Alex Smith; Alison Smith and Octovia Legg; Corbin and Connor Smith; Taylor Hatmacher; and Ayianna Smith; a great-grandson Marshall DePew; brothers and sisters-in-law Paul F. (Geneva) Smith, Laurelville; Neil R. (Linda) Smith, Alabama; a sister Eleanor Smith, Chillicothe; his mother-in-law Dorothy Merritt; sister-in-law Barbara Woollet, both of Chillicothe; and several nieces and nephews. Carl was a graduate of Catholic Central High School, Class of 1949. He retired in 1993 from DuPont where he worked for 40 years as a cost analyst. He was devoted to his family, his church and Bishop Flaget School. Carl was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church and a willing volunteer to any who asked in the community. At St. Mary, he volunteered as an usher, a lector and served on the financial committee. At Flaget, he was the scorekeeper for 30 years and a devoted bingo worker. He will be missed by his family, his church and his community whom he loved and who loved him. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30am Wednesday, April 22, at St. Mary Catholic Church, Rev. Richard Snoke, Celebrant. Burial will follow St. Margaret Cemetery. Friends may call Tuesday from 1-3 and 6-8pm at Haller Funeral Home, where a wake service will be held at 8:00pm. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Mary Church, 61 S.
