Carl Joseph Janes died peacefully in Chillicothe, Ohio on February 25, 2024, at the age of 96.
Carl is survived by his children; Beth Anne (Bob) Neal, Kenneth Janes and Joseph A. (Charlotte) Janes; and one sister, Avonelle Rohe. Carl cherished all of his grandchildren: Brad Osborne and Tiffany Seitz; Liv, Julia, Zach and Selma Janes; and great-grandson Quinn Martindale, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Carl was preceded in death by his wife, Lois Janes, his mother and father, one brother and one sister.
Carl was born on May 3, 1927, in Chillicothe, Ohio to Vera and Claude Janes. He graduated from Chillicothe High School in 1944, and promptly joined the United States Navy where he served from 1944-1947. He married Lois Jean Knapp on December 20, 1952.
In 1962, Carl and Lois started the Corner Market Deli and Grocery Store at the corner of Blacksmith Hill and Charleston Pike. Carl worked for Jones implement during the day while Lois tended to the store. As the business grew, Carl transitioned to working at the Corner Market full time, with Lois acting as the bookkeeper. They continued in this manner for the next 30 years. Today, the Corner Market is a thriving country store – still owned by the Janes Family – and is now part of a Company that had its beginning with the long hours that Carl and Lois spent at the original store.
A funeral is scheduled for 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, February 28th, at Haller Funeral Home & Crematory. Burial will follow in Greenlawn Cemetery. Visitation will be held Wednesday from 12:00 to 2:00 p.m. at the funeral home. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Carl's life.
