Bryan J. Shoemaker, 54, of Chillicothe, Ohio, passed away on Wednesday, November 4, 2026, following an extended illness.
Born January 3, 1972, Bryan was the son of Dorcas Mendenhall and the late Dennis Shoemaker.
Bryan was a 1990 graduate of Chillicothe High School. He went on to study business at DeVry University before discovering, later in life, his true calling in helping others. He pursued his education at Shawnee State University, where he earned a place on the Dean’s List every semester and became a Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant. Bryan dedicated his career to working in long-term care and rehabilitation, helping others regain their independence and return to living life to their fullest potential. His compassion and desire to make a difference in the lives of others were reflected in the work he loved.
From a young age, Bryan had a passion for baseball. He especially cherished his years as a pitcher, a role he remembered with great pride throughout his life.
Bryan was truly the life of the party. A natural storyteller with a wonderful sense of humor, he had a gift for making people laugh and turning even the simplest moments into entertaining memories. He loved sharing stories, exchanging jokes, and enjoying the company of others. He was also never one to shy away from a spirited debate, especially when it came to politics or something he felt strongly about. His fellow patrons at The Cozy Inn knew that a conversation with Bryan was rarely dull. Whether telling a funny story, sharing his opinions, or engaging in some good-natured banter, Bryan had a way of making people smile and leaving them with a story of their own to tell.
Bryan was deeply patriotic, had a keen interest in politics, and held a special admiration and respect for the men and women who served our country.
An animal lover through and through, Bryan found tremendous joy in the companionship of his beloved pets. He enjoyed visits to the Columbus Zoo and had a special place in his heart for animals of all kinds. Being a devoted cat and dog dad was one of his greatest joys, and he proudly embraced his role as a “brother” and “uncle” to the many other cherished pets in his extended family.
Bryan attended Brookside Church in Chillicothe from his youth. Although his wife and mother occasionally had to give him a little nudge to attend, he was always glad he did. He especially enjoyed the sermons of Pastor Ryan Bash, which held a meaningful place in his life.
Following the onset of his illness in July, Bryan came to cherish the time he spent with his mother, Dorcas, as she accompanied him to medical appointments and therapy sessions. What might have seemed like ordinary car rides became treasured opportunities for conversation, laughter, and reminiscing about his childhood. Bryan genuinely looked forward to their time together, finding comfort and happiness in revisiting old memories and sharing stories with his mom. Those moments became a special gift to them both, strengthening a bond that had always been an important part of his life.
Above all, Bryan shared 27 years of love, laughter, and life with his beloved wife, Angel Eisnaugle. Their story began through a lifelong friendship with Jason Hermann, who introduced Bryan to the woman who would become the love of his life. Together, Bryan and Angel built a life filled with companionship, shared memories, and a deep and enduring love.
Bryan is survived by his loving wife of 27 years, Angel Eisnaugle; his mother, Dorcas (Phil) Mendenhall; his late father’s wife, Sharon Shoemaker; his uncle, Leland (Peggy) Gray; aunts, Deborah Ward and Sandra Nunlee; father-in-law, Thomas Al (Angie) Eisnaugle; mother-in-law, Brenda Sims; brother-in-law, Brandon (Nicole) Sims-Clark; sisters-in-law, Natalie (Bryan) Davidson, Corey Jackson, and Amber (Roy) Eisnaugle; honorary “sister-in-law,” Jodi Tippie; his godson, Seth Tippie; his lifelong friend since kindergarten, Kent Barthelmes; and many beloved nieces and nephews. He also leaves behind his beloved cats, Walter and Coco, who brought him immeasurable happiness and companionship.
He was preceded in death by his father, Dennis Shoemaker; his uncles, Timothy Gray and Earnie Ward; his grandparents, Warren and Eunice Gray and Beverly and Dale Shoemaker; and his lifelong friend, Jason (Tracey) Hermann, whose introduction to Angel forever changed the course of Bryan’s life.
Bryan will be remembered for his infectious humor, his gift for storytelling, his compassion for others, his love of animals, his unwavering convictions, and his ability to turn an ordinary gathering into an unforgettable one. Above all, he will be remembered for the love he gave, the laughter he inspired, and the countless memories he leaves behind.
The world will be a little quieter without Bryan in it, but the stories, laughter, and love he leaves behind will never fade.
No services are planned at this time. A celebration of Bryan’s life may be announced at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, those wishing to honor Bryan’s memory are encouraged to make a donation to an animal rescue organization close to his heart, including the Ross County Humane Society, Cat Roundup Rescue, Cats & Company, or Jackson TNR (Trap, Neuter, Release). Bryan’s love for animals was boundless, and helping provide care and second chances to animals in need would be a meaningful way to celebrate his life.
