Bonnie Smith

January 29, 1935 — June 3, 2016

Bonnie L. Smith, 81, of Chillicothe, died 12:35 pm, Friday, June 3, 2016, at the Adena Regional Medical Center, following an extended illness. She was born January 29, 1935 in Fayette Co. to the late Lewis and Dorothy Dove Merritt. On May 21, 1955 she married Carl R. Smith, who died April 16, 2009. Survivors include her children, Tony (Kathy) Smith, and Theresa (Wayne Collins) Smith, of Chillicothe, Anne Justice, of Powell, Tim (Janna Hatfield) Smith, Tom (Lisa Perkins) Smith, Alan (Kim) Smith, Amy (Don Williams) Hatmacher, and Mark Smith, all of Chillicothe; a son-in-law, Tony Justice; grandchildren, Kevin, Brandon (Emily), and Kristen Smith, Tim (Lori) Anderson Jr., Derek and Elena Justice, Alex (Brooke) Smith, Alison (Wil) Kirkbride, Octovia Legg, Corbin and Connor Smith, Taylor Hatmacher and Ayiana Smith; great-grandchildren, Marshall and Garrett DePew and Wilow and Wyatt Kirkbride; a sister, Barbara Woollet, of Chillicothe; a sister-in-law, Eleanor Smith; a brother-in-law, Neil (Linda) Smith; several nieces and nephews; and many close friends in Ohio and Florida. She was preceded in death by her huband; a stillborn brother, Lewis Merritt Jr.; and a brother and sister-in-law, Paul (Geneva) Smith. Bonnie was a Mental Health Technician and retired from the Adena Health System in 1999, following 16 years of service. She was a 1953 Chillicothe High School graduate and a 1983 graduate of Ohio University-Chillicothe. She was a volunteer with the Girls Scouts, St. Mary School, Bishop Flaget School, St. Mary Church, and the Crisis Center. She loved to travel and had taken more than 20 cruises. She also enjoyed her second home in Lehigh Acres, Ft. Myers, FL. The family would like to thank Adena Hospice and Palliative Care, and Dr. David O'Malley and staff at The James, for their wonderful care. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10:00 am Wednesday at St. Mary Church, Rev. Lawrence Hummer, Celebrant. Burial will follow in St. Margaret Cemetery. Calling hours will not be observed. The family will receive friends at the St. Mary Family Life Center immediately following the burial. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Mary Church, Restoration Fund, 61 S. Paint St., Chillicothe, OH 45601 or the James Cancer Center, Ohio State University Foundation, 1480 W. Lane Ave., Columbus, OH 43221.
