Betty Bivens

Betty Jane Johnston Sommers Bivens, 82, of Chillicothe, went home to be with her Lord at 6:30am on September 10, 2008, in Westmoreland Place Nursing Home. Betty was a member of Calvary Apostolic Church, 454 Keller Rd., where funeral services were held at 11:00am Saturday, September 13, with Rev. E. L. Heskett officiating. Burial followed in Greenlawn Cemetery. Friends may call Friday from 6-8pm at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Haller Funeral Home. Betty was born June 20, 1926, in Ross Co. to the late Odessie and Margaret Van Buskirk Johnston. Surviving are her daughters Marilyn "Jody" (Ray) Kimbler; Jennifer Lee Shope, all of Chillicothe; Beth Ann Hamlin and her companion, Marlin Steffy; Cynthia Kay Curtis, all of Columbus; sons Luther F. Sommers III; Oakley J. Bivens and his companion Angela Sayre; Shawn Linn Bivens, all Columbus; Gregory Allen (Rhonda) Bivens, New Straitsville; and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, a son Michael Kent Sommers, 2 grandsons: Edward L. Hamlin and Luther F. Sommers IV; former husbands Luther F. Sommers II and Richard L. Bivens; two brothers and five sisters. Betty was a member of the Ross Co. Genealogy Society where she volunteered before she became ill. She belonged to the First Families of Ross Co., First Pioneers of Ross Co. The family would like to thank Dr. Ellis Frazier and the staff of Westmoreland Place Nursing Home for the kindness and care they gave our beloved mother.
