Alice Mckell

October 9, 1947 — November 4, 2020

Alice Lockwood McKell, 73, of Jenson Beach, Florida, died of complications resulting from lupus on November 4, 2020 at Cleveland Clinic Martin North in Stuart, Florida.   She was born October 9, 1947, in Chillicothe, OH, the daughter of Robert and Amy Story McKell. She was married to Patrick O'Brien, her husband of 26 years, who died in August, 2021. He is survived by his children: Dennis O'Brien of Nashville TN, Terri Wojtowicz of Ellisville MO, Michael O'Brien of St. Louis MO, Sheila DeMand of Maryland Heights MO and Kevin O'Brien of Kirkwood, MO.   Alice is survived by siblings Phoebe McKell (the late David McMillen) of Chillicothe, Robin McKell (Jeffrey Clark) of Chillicothe, Scott McKell (Ann Helm) of Minneapolis MN and Carlin Gilroy (Jonathan Carter) of Columbus; nephew Patrick Currier (the late Angela Mick) of Hamilton OH, and niece Chris (Patrick) Glassburn of Chillicothe; grandnieces Kelly Currier, Sarah Currier, Haley (Brandon) Turley, and grandnephews Thomas Currier, Aaron Glassburn and a player to be named later.   Alice is also survived by stepmother Jennifer (the late Robert) McKell of Chillicothe, and uncles David (the late Faye) McKell of Chillicothe and Thomas (the late Mireille) McKell of Chillicothe. She was predeceased by her parents, as well as aunts Helen (Benjamin) Sproat and Pattison (Clarence) Kuntz, and uncle Clark (Jane) Story. Her uncle and godfather Joseph (the late Mary) McKell has died since Alice's death.   Alice was a 1965 graduate of Unioto High School. She earned her BA in Film and TV Production at Stephens College (Columbia, MO) which led to her employment as a television producer/director in Roanoke VA.   After Alice moved to St. Louis, she served on boards of the St. Louis Society for the Blind, the St. Louis chapter of Light House for the Blind, and Stephens College. Alice's responsibilities at Stephens included extensive travel for fundraising.   Alice had many interests. She was a skilled gardener, voracious reader, small aircraft pilot, NASCAR enthusiast and baseball fan. In fact, living within driving distance of the St. Louis Cardinals' spring camp was a requirement when Alice and Patrick moved to Florida.   Alice was most passionate, however, about her dogs and horses. In high school, she owned and showed horses, later riding with the hounds in St. Louis and, through her close relationship with her aunt, Helen McKell Sproat, served as a mounted steward at Kentucky Horse Park events including an Olympic trial. Alice's love of dogs stemmed from the Great Danes she grew up with in Chillicothe. After she moved to St. Louis in the 1970s, and up until her death, Alice enjoyed the companionship of at least one, and frequently two, Danes.   There will be a memorial for Alice at Grandview Cemetery on Tuesday, May 17th at 5:00. Friends are invited to join the family for a light supper after the service.   In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Lupus Foundation of America (lupus.org) located at 2121 K Street NW, Suite 200, Washington DC 20037.
