Alberta E. (Bertie) Smart, 95 of Chillicothe, Ohio passed away Sunday, May 31, 2015 at her home following a brief illness. She was born October 4, 1919 in Ross County to David and Etha (Tuvell) Penrod. She had a brother Melburn (Avis) Penrod and sister Ethel (Roscoe) Wallace. Following her mother's death in 1920 she was lovingly raised by her aunt and uncle "Poppie" Charles and "Mommie" Maggie (Newland) Penrod where she was raised as one of ten daughters. On March 23, 1940 she married William E. Smart who preceaded her in death on October 3, 1987. She is survived by son Thomas (Janet) Smart, daughter Beverly (Junior) Jones, daughter-in-law, Linda (Bill) Smart, grandson C. Joseph (Connie) Smart, granddaughters Sarah (Greg) Williamson, Kara (Richie Jordan) Smart, Debbie (Terry) Nolan, Katie (Brandon) Crago, and Amy (Nate Kahrig) Bennett, all of Chillicothe; great-grandchildren Elania (Michael) Sipes, Michael (Paige Pernell) Smart, Gunners Mate Seaman Benjamin Williamson U. S. Navy, Jacob Williamson, Makyla Crago, Cole Crago, Zach Nolan, Serena, Jacob, Rebekah and Ian Bennett, special friends Jeanette Hill, Mary Hilf, and Judy Terrell and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, brother and sisters (and their spouses) Melburn (Avis) Penrod, Ethel (Roscoe) Wallace; Dorthy (John) Hart, Elizabeth (Ott) Baker, Mary (Roy) Oldaker, Josephine (Everett) Oldaker, Sadie (Ronnie) Hines, Florence (John) White, Louise (Dick) Buyske, Gladys (James) Pritchard, Esther (Bernard) McCollister; her brother and sisters in-law Richard (Freda) Smart, Juanita (Hank) Zanka, Ruby (John) Sheets, Elva (R.C.) Davis, Charlene "Dutch" (Ray) Scott, and a son C. William (Bill) Smart (on July 20 2009). Bertie worked for a number of years at the U.S. Shoe Corporation in Chillicothe and also worked briefly for Union Scioto Schools. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother and delighted in her family. She was a faithful and willing servant of our Lord. Funeral services will be held 2:00 pm Friday at the Haller Funeral Home, Rev. David Titler officiating. Burial will follow in Grandview Cemetery. Friends may call 6-8 pm Thursday and one hour prior to the service.
